Chinese Zodiac Animals in Order: All 12 Signs and How Each One Plays Pickleball
The Chinese zodiac is a 12-year cycle in which each lunar year belongs to an animal: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig, always in that order. Your animal is set by the year you were born, counted from Lunar New Year rather than 1 January. 2026 is the Year of the Horse. From 6 February 2027 it is the Year of the Fire Goat. Below are all twelve animals, what tradition says about each one, and how that shows up on a pickleball court.
What are the 12 Chinese zodiac animals in order?
The cycle always runs in the same order and repeats every 12 years. The traits are the traditional ones. The court column is ours.
| # | Animal | Recent years | Traditional traits | On court | Tote |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rat 鼠 | 1996, 2008, 2020 | Quick, resourceful, first to spot a chance | First to the ball. Gone before the rally knows it started. | Rat tote |
| 2 | Ox 牛 | 1997, 2009, 2021 | Patient, steady, hard to move | Doesn't chase. Holds the baseline and waits. | Ox tote |
| 3 | Tiger 虎 | 1998, 2010, 2022 | Brave, competitive, plays to win | Plays every point like it owes nothing. | Tiger tote |
| 4 | Rabbit 兔 | 1999, 2011, 2023 | Alert, quick-handed, light on its feet | Hears the drop shot before you hit it. | Rabbit tote |
| 5 | Dragon 龍 | 2000, 2012, 2024 | Confident, ambitious, loves the big moment | Doesn't enter the court. Claims it. | Dragon tote |
| 6 | Snake 蛇 | 2001, 2013, 2025 | Calm, strategic, patient | Waits out the dink rally, then ends it. | Snake tote |
| 7 | Horse 馬 | 2002, 2014, 2026 | Energetic, fast, independent | Covers the court you thought was open. | Horse tote |
| 8 | Goat 羊 | 1991, 2003, 2015 | Creative, calm, does things its own way | Plays its own game, and wins it. | Goat tote |
| 9 | Monkey 猴 | 1992, 2004, 2016 | Clever, playful, reads people | Reads the play before you've made it. | Monkey tote |
| 10 | Rooster 雞 | 1993, 2005, 2017 | Precise, sharp, says what it sees | Calls the score, and the winner. | Rooster tote |

| 12 | Pig 豬 | 1995, 2007, 2019 | Generous, determined, underestimated | Underestimate it once. | Pig tote |
Each year starts on Lunar New Year, which falls between 21 January and 20 February. If you were born in January or early February, check the exact dates in our Chinese zodiac birth year chart before you claim an animal.
Why does the Rat come first in the Chinese zodiac?
The best-known story is the Great Race. The Jade Emperor called the animals to race across a river, and the order they finished in became the order of the years. The Ox was ahead, but the Rat rode across on the Ox's back and jumped off at the finish to win. The Ox came second, then the Tiger and the Rabbit. The Cat, in most tellings, missed the race entirely, which is why there is no Year of the Cat. The Royal Mint tells the full version.
The pickleball lesson writes itself. The Rat didn't win on speed. It won on positioning and timing. Every third shot drop works the same way.
First to the ball. Gone before the rally knows it started.
What are the five elements in the Chinese zodiac?
Each animal year also carries one of five elements: Metal, Water, Wood, Fire or Earth. Each element covers two years in a row, so the full cycle of animal and element only repeats every 60 years. You can find your element from the last digit of your birth year (remember the year starts at Lunar New Year).
| Birth year ends in | Element | Traditionally linked with |
|---|---|---|
| 0 or 1 | Metal | Discipline, focus, resilience |
| 2 or 3 | Water | Adaptability, feel, intuition |
| 4 or 5 | Wood | Growth, generosity, teamwork |
| 6 or 7 | Fire | Energy, passion, confidence |
| 8 or 9 | Earth | Stability, patience, reliability |
So 2026 is a Fire Horse year and 2027 is a Fire Goat year. The last Fire Goat year was 1967, and the next one after 2027 is 2087.

Which Chinese zodiac animals make the best doubles partners?
Tradition groups the twelve animals into four trines of three. Animals in the same trine are said to get on naturally. On a pickleball court, each trine looks like a different style of team.
Rat, Dragon and Monkey: The playmakers
Fast hands, big ideas and the nerve to try the shot nobody else would. Put two of them on one side and the opponents spend the game reacting.
Ox, Snake and Rooster: The grinders
Patient, precise and happy to dink for twenty shots. They don't win points so much as wait for you to lose them.
Tiger, Horse and Dog: The court coverers
Speed, nerve and loyalty. They chase down lobs, cover their partner's side and never concede a ball early.
Rabbit, Goat and Pig: The soft-game specialists
Feel, touch and calm. They win at the kitchen line with resets and drops, and they don't rattle when the bangers arrive.
| Traditional clash | Why it's tricky in doubles |
|---|---|
| Rat and Horse | One wants to speed up, the other wants to cover everything. Nobody takes the middle. |
| Ox and Goat | The Ox won't move, the Goat won't follow the plan. |
| Tiger and Monkey | The Tiger attacks, the Monkey wants to be clever first. |
| Rabbit and Rooster | Both want to be the one at the kitchen line. |
| Dragon and Dog | The Dragon wants the big shot, the Dog wants the safe one. |
| Snake and Pig | The Snake waits, the Pig has already gone for it. |
This is folklore, not a coaching plan. Plenty of Rat and Horse pairs win leagues. But it makes a good argument at the bar after the session.
Horns, scales, a perforated ball. The Dragon doesn't enter the court. It claims it.
How is the Chinese zodiac different from your star sign?
They are two separate systems and you have one of each. Your star sign comes from your birthday month. Your Chinese zodiac animal comes from your birth year.
| Chinese zodiac | Western star signs | |
|---|---|---|
| Based on | Birth year | Birthday (month and day) |
| Cycle | 12 years | 12 months |
| Changes on | Lunar New Year (21 Jan to 20 Feb) | Fixed dates each month |

What is 2027 the year of?
2027 is the Year of the Fire Goat. It starts on 6 February 2027 and runs to 25 January 2028. Until then, it is still the Year of the Fire Horse, which began on 17 February 2026.
If you were born in a Goat year (1967, 1979, 1991, 2003 or 2015, after that year's Lunar New Year), 2027 is your ben ming nian, your own animal's year. Tradition says it is a year to be careful, and many people wear red for luck. On court, that means no excuses for the unforced errors.
Horns curled, beard sharp. The Goat plays its own game, and wins it.
Mane back. Full speed. The Horse covers the court you thought was open.
