The Centerline in Pickleball: Serve Rules and Positioning Explained

The centerline in pickleball is the line that runs down the middle of each side, from the kitchen line to the baseline, splitting the court into the left and right service courts. It matters most on the serve: you must serve diagonally, sending the ball over the net and into the service box on the far side of your opponent's centerline.

It is one small line, but it decides whether your serve is legal and where you and your partner should stand. Here is how it works.

What is the centerline in pickleball?

The centerline is the painted line that divides each half of the court into two equal service courts, a right box and a left box. It starts at the kitchen line (7 feet from the net) and runs back to the baseline. It does not extend into the kitchen itself, so the 7-foot non-volley zone has no centerline through it.

How the centerline affects your serve

Every serve in pickleball must be diagonal. You stand behind the baseline on one side of your centerline and serve across into the service box that is diagonally opposite, on the far side of your opponent's centerline. The ball has to clear the net and the kitchen and land in that diagonal box. If it lands on the wrong side of the centerline, in the kitchen, or outside the box, it is a fault.

One detail that surprises beginners: the centerline and baseline are in bounds for the serve, but the kitchen line is not. A serve that clips the kitchen line is a fault.

Using the centerline for positioning

Off the serve, the centerline is your reference for covering the court with your partner. In doubles, each player takes responsibility for roughly one side of the centerline, and the person nearer a ball hit down the middle usually takes it (typically the forehand in the middle).
